Dental insurance can feel confusing — and honestly, it's designed to be. Deductibles, annual maximums, waiting periods, in-network vs. out-of-network. It's a lot. This guide breaks it down in plain language so you can get the most out of your benefits at Rabbit Creek Dental.
How Dental Insurance Works
Most dental insurance plans are PPO plans — which stands for Preferred Provider Organization. Here's what that means in practice:
In-network vs. out-of-network. Insurance companies negotiate lower rates with certain dentists (in-network providers). If you see an in-network dentist, your out-of-pocket costs are lower. If you see an out-of-network dentist, you may pay more — or some plans won't cover out-of-network care at all.
Annual maximum. Most dental plans have a cap on what they'll pay per year — typically $1,000 to $2,000. Once you hit that limit, you pay 100% of costs until the year resets.
Deductible. Like health insurance, many dental plans have a deductible — an amount you pay out of pocket before insurance kicks in. Deductibles are usually $50–$100 for individuals.
Coverage tiers. Most plans cover preventive care (cleanings, exams, X-rays) at 100%, basic restorative care (fillings) at 80%, and major restorative care (crowns, implants, dentures) at 50% — but only up to the annual maximum.
Waiting periods. Some plans require you to be enrolled for 6–12 months before they'll cover major work. If you just got a new job with dental benefits, check whether there's a waiting period before scheduling crowns or implants.

Delta Dental in Mobile, AL
Delta Dental is one of the most common dental insurance plans in Alabama. If you have Delta Dental through your employer, here's what you should know: Delta Dental has two main networks — Delta Dental PPO and Delta Dental Premier. Whether we're in-network depends on which network your specific plan uses. Call us and we'll check for you — it takes a few minutes and can save you a lot of confusion later.
How to Get the Most from Your Benefits
Use your benefits before year-end. Dental insurance benefits don't roll over. If you have remaining coverage in November or December, that's a great time to schedule any needed work before it resets.
Don't skip preventive visits. Most plans cover cleanings and exams at 100%. These appointments catch small problems before they become expensive ones. Skipping them to "save money" often costs more in the long run.
Ask about treatment timing. If you need multiple procedures, our team can sometimes help you plan treatment across two calendar years to use two annual maximums instead of one.
Understand your EOB. After each visit, your insurance company sends an Explanation of Benefits (EOB). It shows what was billed, what insurance paid, and what you owe. It's not a bill — but it tells you exactly how your benefits were applied.
