How Long Does the Dental Implant Process Take? A Complete Timeline

Quick Answer:
  • From first consultation to final crown, most single implant cases take 4 to 9 months
  • Most of that time is healing, not active treatment
  • You'll have relatively few appointments
  • Most of the timeline is your body fusing the implant to your jawbone

How Long Does the Dental Implant Process Take?

One of the most common questions we hear about dental implants is: how long does the whole thing take? The honest answer is that it varies — but most patients are surprised that it involves fewer appointments than they expected. Here's a complete timeline of what to expect.

Stage 1: Consultation and Planning (Week 1–2)

Everything starts with a consultation. At Rabbit Creek Dental, we use cone beam 3D imaging to evaluate your bone volume, density, and the anatomy of your jaw before making any treatment recommendations. At this appointment: we review your imaging and overall oral health; we discuss whether you're a candidate for implants (or what steps might be needed first); we give you a full cost breakdown before anything is scheduled; we answer your questions. If you need preparatory work — like a bone graft or gum disease treatment — that happens before implant placement and adds time to the overall timeline.

Stage 2: Bone Graft (If Needed) — 3 to 6 Months

Not everyone needs a bone graft. But if your jawbone doesn't have enough volume or density to support an implant, a graft is done first. Bone grafting adds the longest stretch of waiting time to the implant process. The graft needs to heal and integrate with your existing bone before the implant can be placed — typically 3 to 6 months depending on the size of the graft. If you don't need a bone graft, you skip this stage entirely.

Stage 3: Implant Placement Surgery (Day 1 of Active Treatment)

The implant placement itself is a surgical procedure done in our office under local anesthesia. Dr. Gegzna places the titanium fixture into your jawbone where the missing tooth was. The procedure typically takes 1 to 2 hours. Most patients go home the same day and return to normal activity within a day or two, though you'll want to follow aftercare instructions carefully for the first week.

Stage 4: Osseointegration — 3 to 6 Months

This is the longest part of the timeline — and most of it happens on its own. Osseointegration is the process by which your jawbone fuses with the titanium implant. The implant essentially becomes part of your bone, creating the stable foundation that makes implants so durable. This process takes 3 to 6 months depending on your bone density and healing response. During this time you'll have periodic check-ins, but no major procedures.

Stage 5: Abutment Placement (1 Appointment)

Once osseointegration is confirmed, a small connector piece called an abutment is attached to the implant. This is what connects the implant to the crown on top. In some cases the abutment is placed at the same time as the implant. In others, it's a separate brief appointment.

Stage 6: Crown Fabrication and Placement (1–2 Appointments)

Impressions (or digital scans) of your mouth are taken and sent to a dental lab where your custom crown is fabricated. This typically takes 2–3 weeks. When the crown is ready, it's attached to the abutment and adjusted for proper bite. This is your final appointment — and the one where you leave with a complete, functional tooth.

Is the Wait Worth It?

For most patients, yes. The timeline feels long, but most of it is passive healing — not time in the dental chair. And the result is a tooth that looks, feels, and functions like your natural tooth, with a lifespan that can last decades with proper care. We serve patients from Mobile, Theodore, Grand Bay, and the surrounding Gulf Coast area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most single implant cases require 4–6 appointments spread over several months: consultation, implant placement, a check-in or two during healing, abutment placement, and crown delivery.

In some cases, same-day or immediate implants are possible — where the implant is placed the same day as an extraction. This isn't appropriate for every patient. Ask Dr. Gegzna whether you might be a candidate.

Implant failure is uncommon but does happen. If an implant doesn't integrate properly, it's typically removed, the area is allowed to heal, and a new implant is placed. Most patients still end up with a successful implant after a second attempt.

In most cases, yes. We'll discuss options for a temporary tooth during the healing period so you're not without a tooth in a visible area.
